Physicians and Staff

The five physicians on staff at The Seattle Arthritis Clinic are board certified in internal medicine and rheumatology. In addition to being on staff at Northwest Hospital & Medical Center, they are also members of the clinical faculty at the University of Washington and involved in ongoing clinical research.  All of our physicians are certified in bone densitometry, and members of the American College of Rheumatology.

Every member of the clinical staff at The Seattle Arthritis Clinic has extensive experience in treating rheumatologic conditions. Our comprehensive patient care team includes registered nurses, certified nurse's assistants, medical assistants and a nurse practitioner who work together with your physician to develop a treatment plan that meets your individual needs. Our approach is based on a combination of leading-edge techniques, the latest research and proven clinical methods. 

Meet Our Team

Dr. Julie Carkin, MD

Julie Carkin MD

Dr. Carkin has practiced rheumatology in Seattle since 1993. She is board-certified in rheumatology and internal medicine, and has built special interest and expertise in osteoporosis prevention, diagnosis and management. A Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Vermont, she went on to receive her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. During her internship, residency and chief residency in internal medicine at the University of Washington, Dr. Carkin was recognized with the Robert S. Evans award for outstanding resident in internal medicine. She subsequently completed fellowship training in rheumatology at the University of Washington and at Emory University School of Medicine.

Dr. Carkin is the medical director of osteoporosis services at Northwest Hospital and Medical Center and is also a member of the clinical faculty of the University of Washington. Dr. Carkin has been repeatedly chosen by her peers as one of “Seattle’s Top Docs,” in an annual issue of Seattle Magazine. When not treating patients, Dr. Carkin is an avid Seattle Mariners fan and as a native of Massachusetts, she is still a member in good standing of the “Red Sox Nation”. She also enjoys mountain and road cycling, hiking and spending time with family and friends.

Dr. Andrew Solomon, MD

Andrew Solomon MD

Dr. Solomon received his medical degree from the Sackler School of Medicine/ New York State Program at Tel Aviv University. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Greenwich Hospital Associate/Yale University School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in rheumatology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Solomon’s years of experience treating rheumatology-related conditions have included positions at Lehigh Rheumatology Associates in Allentown, PA, the Hospital for Joint Diseases/ Orthopedic Institute, New York, and the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, Bronx, NY. Dr. Solomon is a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Washington.

Dr. Solomon is married with three children. Away from his practice, he is an active rock climber, backpacker, skier and cyclist. A dedicated movie collector, Dr. Solomon is also an avid audiophile and music lover.

Dr. Richard Jimenez, MD

Richard Jimenez MD

Dr. Jimenez has a long history of clinical research and treatment in rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, osteoarthritis, pain management and other conditions. Dr. Jimenez received his medical degree from the Medical University of Ohio. He took his residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and completed a subsequent fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Washington. In addition to his work at The Seattle Arthritis Clinic, he is also medical director for Evergreen Clinical Research Associates. Dr. Jimenez is a clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of Washington.

After escaping the Midwest, Dr. Jimenez has spent his leisure time pursuing typical Northwest activities, including hiking, mountaineering, snowboarding, fly fishing, biking and boating. He leaves the horseback riding to his wife and two daughters.

Dr. Jeff Peterson, MD

Jeff Peterson MD

A Puget-Sound-area native, Dr. Peterson earned his medical degree from the University of Washington. He took a residency in internal medicine at Internal Medicine Spokane and followed with a fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Washington. Dr. Peterson has been a medical technology consultant and a research associate at ICOS Corp, which discovers and develops treatment for inflammation and other diseases. He frequently lectures and has published research on a wide variety of diseases and disorders.

Dr. Peterson is active in clinical research and is currently a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Washington. He is President of the Washington Rheumatology Alliance, an organization that is devoted to patient and physician education and advocates for patient access to quality rheumatologic care. Dr. Peterson has a passion for all manner of outdoor activities and is an avid gardener, cook and woodworker. He enjoys antiques and is currently learning to make wine.

Dr. Steven Overman, MD, MPH

Steven Overman MD, MPH

Dr. Overman has practiced rheumatology in Seattle for more than 25 years. He received his medical degree with AOA Honors from University of Alabama Medical School and went on to the University of Washington, where he completed board certification in internal medicine and rheumatology, was chief resident and completed the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars health services research fellowship. Dr. Overman also earned a master’s degree in public health at the University of Washington, where he is currently a clinical associate professor of medicine, and was medical director for the Providence Arthritis Resource Center and for Network Health Plan. Dr. Overman is currently the director of musculoskeletal planning and development and medical director of rheumatology at Northwest Hospital & Medical Center. He sits on the hospital’s pain committee, as well as on Puget Sound Health Alliance’s clinical improvement committee for spine care.

Dr. Overman co-authored and frequently speaks at conferences and on radio about his book, You Don’t LOOK Sick! Living Well With Invisible Chronic Illness, which was a finalist in the Health category of Best Books 2005 awarded by USA Book News. He has been frequently named among “Seattle’s Top Docs,” by his peers in an annual issue of Seattle Magazine. Dr. Overman is married to Holly and they are the proud parents of Matthew, Jonathan and Peter. The family enjoys traveling together, including hiking, biking, skiing and fly-fishing trips.

Don Uslan, MD

Don Uslan MA, MBA, LMHC

Mr. Uslan is a medical psychotherapist and certified rehabilitation counselor who specializes in the treatment of patients with chronic medical conditions and related psychological, disability, legal and occupational problems. He provides individual, group and integrated care programs as part of TSAC, and assists the physicians in case management, planning and coordination, and the integration of other health services into their patients’ care. Mr. Uslan received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He has a master’s degrees in psychotherapy and counseling from Antioch College and in business administration with an emphasis in healthcare program development from City University.

Mr. Uslan presents at a wide variety of conferences and is frequently published in the areas of disability, integrated care, rehabilitation and mental health. Mr. Uslan is married with two sons. The family enjoys hiking, camping, traveling and visiting with family and friends, and are very active in the religious, educational and cultural life of their community.
